Nacre is an organic material that comes from a living being. It refers to the internal part of certain molluscs that lines the inside of their shells. It is made up of superimposed layers which, when exposed to light, influence its colour, which is why each nacre has its own unique personality. In its natural state, it is white or grey and can be dyed to obtain coloured shades. There are as many colours of mother-of-pearl as there are shells. This is probably why its name, from the Persian nakkar, means "that which is beautiful and shimmering".
