Of the chalcedony family, carnelian is translucent. The tone varies from red to yellowish red, a colour due to the presence of iron. The possible origin of the word is double: its name would come from cornum "dogwood" by allusion to the colour of the pulp of the fruit of this tree, but seems more probably resulting from Cornus, port of Sardinia.In Persia, it protected against the "evil eye" and the venom of spiders and scorpions.
