River pearl

The pearl is a small sphere of nacre that forms inside molluscs when a foreign body, such as sand or small parasites, gets into their shells. A "pearl sac" forms around the parasite and the pearl continues to grow through the secretion of about 3,000 successive layers of nacre. River pearls, also known as freshwater pearls, are formed by human intervention to introduce the foreign body. Freshwater cultured pearls, produced in Chinese lakes and rivers, is a process that dates back to the 13th century. It takes about 2 years for a pearl to form.
